Job Summary

At Chesterton, we have a laser focus on our customers. The Senior Mechanical Engineer is responsible for a wide range of complex mechanical engineering assignments under limited supervision with considerable discretion as to work details. Responsible for providing strategic advice, technical design support, and engineering consultation and review for new and upgraded mechanical seal and associated systems in the hydropower industry and similar projects. Interfaces with multiple departments throughout the organization, external customers, and field support personnel.

Job Model:  Hybrid

Hybrid positions will require employees to work both on-site and remote each week under a schedule that has been determined and agreed upon by you and your manager.

 

Responsibilities

·        Participates in engineered solutions projects with a focus on hydroturbine sealing projects from concept through design, testing, manufacturing, and field installation, following all applicable checklists and processes.

·        Analyzes, develops, and recommends design approaches necessary to meet demand definition requirements for products and processes.

·        Supports engineered solutions staff and end users with input on project planning (engineering focus) & serves as engineering project lead for projects as assigned. Performs planning studies, detailed analyses and designs, and technical specifications for hydropower seal applications and projects.

·        Interfaces with applications engineering, special projects management, drafting, testing laboratory, manufacturing, purchasing, quality control, special cell and vendors on various issues associated with supported product lines.

·        Accompanies sales/field product specialists to customer sites to survey site conditions, assess and/or size equipment and components, document special equipment operating requirements, and provide additional hands-on expertise

·        Reviews and approves related input such as drawings, installation manuals, and specifications prepared by technical support staff.

·        Contributes on behalf of Chesterton in Industry Trade Associations and Standards groups. Reports status of various activities and status of standards to Engineering & Marketing as needed.

·        Provides SME support to Engineering and Sales & Marketing as needed.

·        Works under very general direction. Independently determines and develops approaches to solutions. Exercises discretion as to work details. Work is reviewed upon completion for adequacy in meeting objectives.

·        Ability to apply a wide range of complex engineering principles and concepts in the field.

·        Working knowledge and understanding of multiple related disciplines such as manufacturing, quality control, and cost reduction.

·        Provides technical assistance and solutions to a wide range of difficult problems requiring technical competence.

·        Frequent inter-organizational and outside customer contacts.

·        Interfaces regularly with multiple levels of the organization and vendors on issues relating to product lines. May represent organization in providing solutions to difficult technical problems associated with specific projects.

·        Ability to work with all Engineering staff. Directs & supports Engineering technicians & technologists.

·        Competence in drafting, and multiple disciplines related to the development, production and improvement of mechanical seals and packings.

 

Education and/or Experience

·        B.S. in Mechanical Engineering

·        Minimum 6-8 years engineering experience with industrial projects

·        Experience in rotating industrial equipment and seal systems

·        Knowledge of hydropower mechanical, hydraulic, and flow systems, including turbines, generators, penstocks, gates and valves, bearings, and other control systems.

 

Other Skills and Abilities

·        Advanced technical and problem solving skills.

·        Strong written, verbal, interpersonal and customer contact communication skills.

·        Troubleshooting skills and organizational skills.

·        Skilled with word processing, spreadsheets, CAD experience desirable.

·        Hands – on experience with rotating and stationary equipment desirable.

·        Hands – on experience with hydropower turbine equipment including main and ancillary sealing systems is desirable.

This job will require occasional travel and visits to industrial sites where applicable hazard training and PPE will need to be implemented. Exposure to high levels of noise and temperature may exist at customer sites during visits.

Targeted pay range: $125,000 - $145,000/yr. depending on experience

 

Chesterton is committed to paying all its employees in a fair and equitable manner. The pay range associated with this position ( $125,000 - $145,000/yr. DOE) is Chesterton's good-faith salary estimate for the presently available position. Several roles at Chesterton are considered “leveled” positions and as such, the company reserves the right to advertise and or hire for this position at appropriate level depending on applicant’s skillset/experience. If the salary range to be offered for a “leveled” based position (I, II, III, etc.) is different than what was advertised on any posting, that range will be discussed with the candidate before they are formally invited to interview.

 

Hired applicants may be eligible for additional incentive compensation depending on the level and or function of the position which will be discussed with the candidate prior to formal interview. Payments under these programs are not guaranteed and are dependent upon a variety of factors including, but not limited to, individual performance, business unit performance, and/or the company’s performance.
